sample basket made of fabric

The Hampton Roads ASG has the opportunity to hold a workshop with local artisan Paula Harr. While Paula has been a quilter since the 1980s, she has recently added creating coiled rope baskets to her impressive resume. Not only does she create and sell them on Etsy, local handmade shows and other venues, she also teaches classes so everyone can learn to make their own version.
The class teaches the technique used to make coiled rope baskets out of clothesline. The class includes information about different types of clothesline/rope, method for sewing the bowl, ways to embellish, wrapping the rope with fabric strips, and several decorative ways of finishing the bowl.
Supplies needed for the class are sewing machine with zigzag foot, three or four binding clips, glue stick, 1 inch fabric strips and 100 feet of clothesline, available in the hardware section of Wal-Mart, which Paula prefers to use because it makes the sturdiest bowls. The attendees receive a handout for future reference.
Many examples of the baskets can be found at Facebook.com/PatchworkByPaula.
In order to schedule a class, Hampton Roads ASG President Cindy Huffman needs a head count of those interested in taking the class. Contact her at Cindy Huffman (757) 839-0881 or cindyleehuffman@gmail.com.
